Chinese scammer pleads guilty after UK seizes nearly $7 billion in bitcoin
A Chinese woman accused of running a multibillion-dollar investment fraud has pleaded guilty in London after U.K. police uncovered one of the largest cryptocurrency seizures in history, nearly $7 billion in bitcoin. Prosecutors say 47-year-old Zhimin Qian operated a vast Ponzi-style scheme in China from 2014 to 2017 through her company, Tianjin Lantian Gerui Electronic Technology, promising returns of up to 300%. After defrauding more than 128,000 investors, Qian fled China using a fake passport and settled in London, where she and associate Jian Wen allegedly laundered the funds through luxury property purchases and business ventures. A 2018 police raid on her home uncovered laptops containing 61,000 bitcoin, an amount the Metropolitan Police called “the single largest cryptocurrency seizure in the world.”
Stripe-Backed Tempo Blockchain Raises $500 Million in Series A
Tempo, a new payments-focused blockchain backed by Stripe and Paradigm, has raised $500 million in a Series A round that values the project at $5 billion. The funding was led by Thrive Capital and Greenoaks, with additional participation from Sequoia, Ribbit Capital, and SV Angel, though Stripe and Paradigm did not invest directly. The raise ranks among the largest blockchain venture deals in recent years, highlighting renewed institutional confidence in stablecoins and corporate-backed blockchain networks. With the global stablecoin market now exceeding $300 billion, major financial players are betting that these assets will soon underpin the next generation of international payments and settlements.
Coinbase hacker panic-sold ETH during market crash at a $4.5M loss
A hacker tied to the theft of 400 BTC from a Coinbase user has reportedly panic-sold their ether (ETH) holdings during a sharp market downturn, losing more than $4.5 million in a single day. Data from blockchain tracker Lookonchain shows the attacker dumped 8,638 ETH worth $32.5 million as Ethereum’s price fell nearly 9% and Bitcoin slid to about $103,850. The sale came just days after the hacker bought 9,240 ETH for $39.5 million, locking in heavy losses as the market crashed. The broader selloff erased more than $100 billion from the global crypto market capitalization, deepening fear among traders and investors.
